Find your voice

Oct 13, 2023

What Does "Finding Your Voice" Mean in Business Thought Leadership?

Finding your voice is often thought about as discovering your unique perspective and communication style that set you apart in a sea of sameness.

Setting Yourself Apart: The Unique Perspective

Your voice is your vehicle to convey your unique perspective, and it's crucial to distinguish yourself in the corporate landscape or any industry you are in.

I love the journey of Patagonia, the outdoor clothing and gear company. Yvon Chouinard, the company's founder, didn't just create outdoor gear; he founded a movement for environmental sustainability and corporate responsibility. Chouinard's unique perspective wasn't solely about profit; it was about fostering a deeper connection between business and the environment. This distinctive perspective has not only driven Patagonia's success but has also inspired a generation of socially conscious entrepreneurs.

We see a trend in modern leaders bringing together their personal passions with their business ambitions. Franz Johansson describes the synergy that can happen with that as “Click moments”.

The Power of Your Tone: Authentic Connection

While your perspective differentiates you, your tone is the language through which you communicate it. Your tone is your vocal signature, much like an artist's brushstroke on a canvas. Herb Kelleher, the co-founder and former CEO of Southwest Airlines, embodied a unique tone that set the airline apart. His tone was playful, approachable, and focused on the "fun" in flying. Kelleher's approach transformed Southwest into a beloved airline that wasn't just about getting from point A to B; it was about enjoying the journey. His tone cultivated a deep, authentic connection with passengers.

Most leaders assume this is a given, something you just have. But actually tone is cultivated. As is your voice. That’s why very successful leaders work with me specifically on their vocal agility and sustainability. We want a tone that is authentic and easy to produce. You are not as limited to the sound you know than you think…

Why Does It Matter in Business?

In the world of business, communication transcends information; it forges relationships, instils trust, and wields influence.

As you navigate the exciting landscape of thought leadership, remember this: your unique perspective and authentic tone are your competitive advantages and they are a foundational pillar of your brand. Corporate and personal.
